Rudy Arnheim's books were an important part of my art education. They can be long, convoluted and difficult, because it is more important for him to express the full idea than to try to keep it simple. The solution to the problem is this book of essays, which are short. The ideas are fleshed out, but are not so large that pounds of paper are needed to print the sentences on. In the confined space he manages to turn accepted ideas refreshingly on their heads and to elucidate on questions like "How do we look at Rorschach cards?"
