Published in 1935, this is Lewis's vision of how fascism would come to America. The main character, Doremus Jessup, is a newspaper editor from Fort Beulah, Vermont and watches as populist Sen. Buzz Windrip ascends to the presidency and begins, piece by piece, to turn the country into a fascist regime, with all the trappings of American culture still firmly in place. Doremus keeps hoping before, during, and after the election that common sense will return to his fellow citizens. It doesn't. Lewis famously said, "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross." It's scary to see how right he was.
