Rainy Day Fun

As it rained last week I thought what a perfect time for staying inside and read!

Two radically different, but equally wonderful novels, for this are The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett and Bloomability by Sharon Creech. I came at both these books from different roads, but both lead me down a path of wonderful reading!

I picked up a book with a cover that had odd little blue men. Now, I’d heard of little green men, but not little blue men. And why were they standing on the head of a sheep? I got my answer when I went to page one of The Wee Free Men.  It took me on a seriously hilarious romp with witch-to-be Tiffany and the Nac Mac Feegle (those little blue men more commonly known as the Wee Free Men).  Armed with a frying pan and common sense, our heroine has many adventures when she goes into Fairyland to save her family. Pratchett’s serious humor and wonderful telling of magical adventures of the Nac Mac Feegle and Tiffany (not a typical witch due to many wonderful quirks of her personality and Pratchett’s love of not following the “rules” of what a witch “should” be!) make this a great book for lovers of fantasy, his other works, readers of humor or even if you are a first time reader of his novels. This truly is a book for teens and adults alike.  You can continue their adventures in Hat Full of Sky and Wintersmith.

I was browsing the shelves many years ago looking for a new read. A friend recommended Sharon Creech. Being new to the world of bookselling, I took his sage advice. What I found was Bloomability, which is an excellent coming of age story that is true to life. Dinnie, our plucky heroine, is presented with many "opportunities" and is having trouble adjusting. But when she finds friends at her new school she learns that there are many more wonderful possibilities and anything can bloom! I would come to learn that this is just another example of Creech's talent as a wonderful middle reader and young adult author.

I equally recommend both these books to kids, teens and adults of all ages. I equally recommend both these books to be read during rainy or even sunny days. These two novels can be found on the shelves of the bookstore, and are waiting to be taken to yours! (But only until you come back for a second, third or more read!)-->
