Northshire Bookstore ReviewReviewed By... Nancy ScheemakerWhen an airliner crashes off the coast of Nova Scotia, relatives of the passengers arrive to wait out search and rescue efforts at a seaside Inn. As the days pass, an emotional collage unfolds as everyone adapts to the certain reality of the accident. The beauty of this story is not just the powerfully eloquent writing style, but the author's keen balance of emotion. Kessler has taken a storyline that cou... read more>>>

Northshire Bookstore ReviewReviewed By... Heather BellancaLike chocolate ganache, delicious, concentrated, dark (like a Norwegian forest, not film noir) and so rich it doesn't take much. This thoughtful novel set at the tail end of WWII in Norway is a quiet, yet startling gem. Portrays a young teenage boy whose father has taken him to summer at a cabin in the woods on the Swedish border. In addition to the nostalgic look at traditional Norway as it was till say... read more>>>

Northshire Bookstore ReviewReviewed By... Heather BellancaThe author manages to tell this sad tale in a way that is beautiful, moving and not depressing. I was able to imagine the opulence of Leningrad's Hermitage Museum, as well as the devastating deprivation caused by the WWII seige of Leningrad. I really cared about the aging West Coast immigrant whose present-day mind is succumbing to Alzheimers but remembers vividly her youth as a docent at the Hermitage, f... read more>>>

Northshire Bookstore ReviewReviewed By... Karen Frank
This is fun and fabulous 19th century historical fiction. A young Irish girl ends up as a housekeeper in a run-down Scottish mansion. We discover lots of interesting things about her and her mistress. The author develops an intricate plot dotted with great "bit part" characters and weaves amusing and evocative language throughout. The writing has a Dickensian feel with a good measure of Jane Austen thr... read more>>>

I try really hard to love every book I read. The easy measure of a book that
succeeds for me is if I don't leave it on my bedside stand for a few
paragraph's nightly reading before nodding off, but carry it with me to
read while brushing my teeth, eating lunch, etc. until it's done. I'm not
drawn to Sci Fi, murder mysteries, romance novels or New Age - otherwise, my
criteria is in the "je ne sais quoi" realm. Good character studies,
historical settings, no action needed. I hope you'll read the books I
recommended - they're here because I loved them!
