Dubus's memoir focuses on his years growing up in neighborhoods that were as much fighting class as they were working class. He, his three siblings and his mother endured considerable hardships, including many violent encounters, while his famous but mostly absent father lingered on the fringes. This is a fascinating examination of violence and how it can simultaneously attract and repulse.

Completely compelling, superbly researched, and crisply written. Probably veteran historian McLynn's finest work. An incisive biography, a vivid portrayal of an era of astonishing discovery, and an evocative portrait of culture clash. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Boomers know him from the phenomenal 1950s TV series but even in his lifetime he was already iconic. This solid biography clears up many misconceptions about Crockett and succeeds splendidly in giving context to a very original American. A pleasure all the way.

Better yet, consult this little book to learn from a distinguished scholar the ways in which Americans have had a field day in distorting the truth for over two centuries...and why it will continue.
